“But wait, what is that I’m seeing
What is that case – that box – that yellow
Is it a frame? A container?
A potential – an activity – How can I tell if it’s yellow – If it’s contain yellow or the potential of yellowness – The potential to act
A call – perhaps
I can’t say
A space of dialogue – of travel maybe
may – be”

(Yve Lomax, Sounding the Event: Escapades in Dialogue and Matters of Art, Nature & Time, 2002: 107, Paraphrased by Terry Perk 17/04/14 15:15)

Stella & The yellowSUITCASE is an exploration of the potentiality in enabling alternative forms of thinking about exhibitions. It was driven by a concern about the privatization of ideas and galleries in Indonesia and the space for Indonesian artists to develop independent expressive practices in the context of that gallery system.

I have used my travel suitcase that has connotations of mobility and also secrecy of containment, as both a metaphor and real space for imagining the idea of the exhibition.

It is a trigger and a starting point for a conversation between Indonesian and foreign contemporary artists in exploring a potential dialogue and exchange. It also has a potential outcome in a form of experimental collaborative project between artists.

To begin the first communication artists were invited to respond to a video and a manual that consist of various themes and connotations around the suitcase that can be explored in reflection to their own practice.

Let the collaboration begin…
